Brown butter is regular butter that has been cooked until the milk solids turn golden brown.  This simple technique creates a rich, caramel-like flavor that pairs perfectly with bananas.

 

Ingredients for Brown Butter Banana Bars:

  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups mashed bananas, about 4 medium ripe bananas
  • 2 tsp vanillla
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cups chopped walnuts, optional

 

Browned Butter Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 tbsp milk

 

How to Make Brown Butter Banana Bars:

  • Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Grease and flour a 10 x 15 baking sheet.  Line with parchment paper if desired.
  • Mash the bananas with a fork.
