Easy Twisted Breadsticks

Easy Twisted Breadsticks

We love any kind of Italian food and these twisted breadsticks are so delicious and easy to make!  I made them to go with fettuccine alfredo but you can also dip them in your favorite marinara or dipping sauce for a delicious snack or appetizer. These are great with any soup, salad or pasta dish and come together in 90 minutes or less.  They are dipped in butter and topped with garlic salt, freshly grated parmesan cheese and a few sesame seeds.  Yum yum!!

How to make easy twisted breadsticks:

These breadsticks are made with a few simple ingredients that you probably have on hand:  yeast, sugar, salt, water, flour, butter, garlic salt and parmesan cheese.

Mixing breadsticks:

  • In a small mixing bowl dissolve one packet of yeast in warm water (between 105 to 115 degrees).  You can use an instant read thermometer to test the water temperature.  If the water is too hot it will kill the yeast.  Let the yeast sit in the water for about 2 minutes.
  • After yeast is dissolved, stir in two tablespoons of sugar.  Let this mixture sit for about 3-5 minutes until the yeast begins to get bubbly.
  • In the meantime, mix flour and salt in a large mixing bowl.  Add the yeast mixture and stir just until combined.  Knead the mixture in the bowl for 3 minutes.
  • Cover with a towel and set aside in a warm spot for about 10 minutes so dough can rise.

  • While the dough is rising place 1/2 cube of butter in a glass bowl and melt in the microwave.

Baking breadsticks:

Risen dough

Roll dough and cut into strips

  • After your dough is risen place it on a clean floured counter or a pastry mat and roll the dough out into a rectangle (about 16″x12″).
  • Cut the dough into strips (about 1-1/2″-2″ as shown above) and then cut it in half.  They don’t need to be exact.  You can eyeball it.  I ended up with 20 breadsticks.

Unbaked breadsticks

  • You can either place the butter on a cookie sheet and dip breadsticks into it or use a pastry brush and brush both sides of the breadsticks with butter.
  • Twist the dough and place breadsticks in rows on two cookie sheets sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Sprinkle the breadsticks lightly with garlic salt and fresh finely grated parmesan cheese.  You can also sprinkle with a few sesame seeds and some parsley for color.  I made one pan without the cheese and one with cheese.  I liked the ones with cheese the best because it added more color to the breadstick.

Unbaked breadsticks

  • Bake the breadsticks in a 375 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are turning golden brown.  You can bake both pans at the same time.  You will need to alternate racks halfway through so both pans bake and brown evenly.

  • Breadsticks can be reheated in the oven wrapped in tinfoil.

How to store breadsticks:

Let them cool and wrap in tinfoil or place in a ziplock bag.  They will keep for about 3 days.  They can be frozen for up to 3 months.
