Simple French Toast
Sometimes I just like to keep things easy like this simple french toast recipe. French toast is great for breakfast or brunch but sometimes we even like to eat it for dinner. It is so quick to make and you can top it with anything. I recently made some Fresh Peach Syrup that makes a great topping. My Homemade Blueberry Syrup is fantastic too or you can use maple syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, hazelnut spread, or any other desired toppings. It is best to use a thicker type of bread because it is able to soak up more of the egg mixture which makes it more fluffy. I like to make french toast with old-fashioned bread or granny bread but challah, Texas toast, French bread or any other thicker type of bread works well. With a few basic ingredients you will have a delicious breakfast in minutes!
What you will need to make Simple French Toast:
- 4 slices of any type of thick bread
- 2 eggs
- Milk
- Vanilla extract
- Cinnamon
- Your choice of toppings
How to make Simple French Toast:
- Crack eggs into a dish that is large enough to easily dip your bread into. Whisk up the eggs.
- Add the milk, vanilla extract and cinnamon and whisk mixture together.
- Dip each side of your bread into the egg and milk mixture.
- Spray a frying pan with cooking spray or if desired you can melt some butter in the pan.
- Place two slices of bread in the pan and cook over medium high to brown it. Watch carefully and flip the toast when it is browned on the outside. Be careful not to overcook it.
- Brown the other side and then transfer the toast to a plate. You can keep it warm in the oven at 250 degrees if desired while you cook the rest of the toast.
- Transfer the warm toast to a plate and top with butter, syrup or any other toppings of your choice.
Notes for making french toast:
- I like to use old fashioned bread or granny bread and each slice is only 90 calories. When counting calories take into account what type of bread you are using.
- If you want more cinnamon, sprinkle some on the side of the bread that is face up while it is in the pan. Sometimes the last few slices need a little more cinnamon while cooking.
- I used 2% milk but you can use whole milk or mix in a little cream if you want more richness. I don’t use skim milk because I like a little more fat content.
- You can use butter to cook the toast in if you prefer. I find it easier to just use cooking spray.
- You can store the french toast in a storage bag for later if you have left overs. Make sure to let it cool completely before storing it. Keep in the refrigerator up to 3 days. It can also be frozen by placing the french toast slices in a freezer bag or container for up to 3 months. Unthaw before eating and reheat in a frying pan or the microwave.
- This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled depending on how many people you need to feed.
